History of the Library

The Library was established from the dispersed collections of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of Poznań University, the Horticultural College in Poznań, and other units. The official opening date of the Main Library of the Higher School of Agriculture in Poznań was 1 January 1953.

From 1953–1955, the Library was housed in the Agricultural Chemistry Building. Until 1970, it occupied premises in three different buildings belonging to the Higher School of Agriculture. In 1970, the Library received a dedicated building at ul. Wojska Polskiego 71A and basement space in the Military Studies building on ul. Niestachowska.

A dynamic development of information services began in 1987 due to the computerisation of the Library. In 1991, the Library was allocated the premises of the former Military Studies unit. The relocation started on 1 August 1991. Adaptation of the premises for reading rooms and furnishing was completed in 1993. On 15 May 1993, the reading rooms were officially opened, marking the inauguration of the Main Library of the Agricultural Academy in its new location.

The following years brought further development: full computerisation, Internet access, implementation of a new library system (Horizon), open access to the reference collection in the reading rooms, and retrospective conversion of the catalogue.

Since 1993, the institution has operated as the Main Library and Scientific Information Centre. In 2020, the name was changed from “Main Library and Scientific Information Centre” to Library and Scientific Information Centre.
